My Evaluation On This Horror Poster Creation

Evaluation On Creating A Horror Movie Poster

Learning Experience

Horror films are not a genre that I had any knowledge of before I embarked on this project. My research of various horror movie posters opened the door to me seeing the way horror is depicted in advertising. Seeing the range of ways that type can enhance a poster was an eye opener. I learnt how type, when used appropriately, can sell a product and give a pretty good idea of what the message is. I looked at horror movie posters right from the beginning of the 20th Century through to the present age.

I learnt a few more techniques on Illustrator like tracing images and using the pen tool to create images. I id try my hand at using effects to render a different background as welll as gradients. It is still something that I'm working on perfecting.

Improvements – What I would have changed if I had had more time
More tutorials on Adobe Illustrator would have helped me make the background that I had in mind. I would probably do a more minimalist look on a poster and using type to explain the movie.I would have done one or two more final posters in order to be able to choose the better one. The way I handled this project was made easier by being able to post work onto the blog and to see it in a different light.

Would I do it again?
I feel that I would handle any other movie poster comfortably using the process of research, making mood boards, sketching items and using Adobe Illustrator to create the poster.

My understanding of it
Research of the genre was important in order to see how design had changed during the years. My take on it is that design has become simpler on horror movie poster having been usually cluttered and literal in earlier years.

Overall Self Critique

From the initial sketches and ideas of the final horror movie poster, the colors that I had planned to use – my mind changed nearer to the end of the project. I ended up using colors that depicted fire which were in this case red and orange. I would say that I used the skill level that I had to the best of my ability but could have done better.  I would say a good effort overall – 7 out of 10

The Final Poster & The Making of It

This is my final poster for a psychological horror movie called Case 39.It's about a social services department that is dealing with abuse in a family. The young girl seems to be at the receiving end of this abuse - but then - it's not as it seems as she is the abuser.
Below are a few development shots of how I got to the final poster.

I drew the girl in pig tails and drew the mask separately. The sketches were then scanned and rendered using the softest settings of the Blob Brush  tool to make a silhouette of the girl. The different parts were then grouped together, text added in different typefaces to see which worked best. I finally decided on the fiery type. The girl holding the file seemed to work much better as the file gave more colour to the poster.

Brainstorm - Y-Chart

The Horror movie that I've chosen to work on is called CASE 39. It's a psychological horror - of the mediocre kind with not so much gory detail.
